The Owen County Democratic Party has announced its plans for their annual Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinner to be held Saturday, March 15th. The featured speaker for the evening will be Joseph Hogsett. Joe has played an active role in Indiana’s civic life for nearly twenty years as a counselor to governors, a political party leader and, most prominently, during his six-year tenure as Indiana’s Secretary of State. Both Indiana Governor candidates, Jim Schellinger and Jill Long-Thompson, will be in attendance as will State Representative Vern Tincher. This year, Jo Ann Ligon, Bob Siscoe, and Mark Snapp are candidates for the three County Council At-Large seats. Richard Foutch is candidate for Commissioner Dist. 2 and George Jennings a candidate for Commissioner Dist. 3. There will be opportunities to meet each of the Democratic candidates and current Democratic elected officials.

The event will be held at the Spencer First Christian Church Life Center, located one block southwest of the Courthouse Square. Please note that this is a new location for the event. Tickets will be sold in advance of the event and are $15.00 per person. They are available from any Democratic party official or by calling 829-4254. The evening will begin with a social time at 5:00pm and with the dinner and program starting promptly at 6:00pm. The dinner will be catered by Lois Bixler. Door prizes will be given away upon conclusion of the evening. There will also be a 50/50 drawing.

Joseph Hogsett served as Indiana’s Secretary of State from 1988 through 1993. He improved the operations of the office while cutting the office’s budget. His “doing more with less” philosophy resulted in national awards for the office’s corporations division and for his securities division’s aggressive pursuit of enforcement actions on behalf of Hoosier investors. He significantly increased the fines against unscrupulous stockbrokers.

Hogsett was born and raised in Rushville, Indiana. He is a graduate of Rushville Consolidated High School and received a Bachelor’s degree with honors from Indiana University in history and political science. Joe then entered the Indiana University School of Law and graduated in 1981. As a law student, Hogsett clerked for Judge James M. Dixon of the Monroe Circuit Court and was a member of the constitutional law moot court team. After law school, Hogsett joined the Indianapolis law firm of Bingham, Summers, Welsh & Spilman. While practicing law, Hogsett earned a Master’s degree in English from Butler University, awarded in 1987.

Hogsett managed Evan Bayh’s successful campaign for Governor in 1988. He was the Democratic Party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate in 1992 and the Democratic Party’s nominee for the 2nd Congressional District in 1994. Hogsett went on to serve as Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to Governor Evan Bayh from 1995 to 1997. In January 1997, Hogsett returned to the practice of law at Bingham, Summers, Welsh & Spilman (now Bingham McHale), where he is a partner specializing in employment law. In August of 1999, Hogsett graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Master’s degree in theological studies from the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana. In May 2007, he also obtained a Master’s degree in history from Indiana University.

Hogsett is a member of the Indianapolis Bar Association, the Indiana Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association. He is a member and serves as Chairperson of the Staff-Parish Committee at Roberts Park United Methodist Church in downtown Indianapolis.

Chairman Anton Karl Neff noted, “We are honored to have Joe and our Governor candidates visit our community and speak at our dinner. This is an excellent opportunity for the public to meet them. We welcome everyone to our dinner and invite you to be a part of this event.”
